After John's arrival late last Wednesday, we packed our bags and headed north on Thursday morning in hopes of getting seats on a military flight over to Germany.. We really lucked out, finding extra space on a flight leaving Friday. The next thing we knew we were on a speed train out of Ramstein Air Force Base in Kaiserslautern, Germany and on our way to Paris. After setting eyes on the Eiffel Tower for the first time, we settled in for the night in preparation for a long day of sightseeing the next day.
On Sunday we toured the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame, the Louvre, down the Champs Elysees and finished off with a night walk by the Seine. It was freezing, and we enjoyed our coffee stops at the local cafes. We were exhausted after walking most of the way, but still hit the ground running Monday morning with a train to Normandy. We rented a car to Arromanches, a small town on the beach where the British landed on D-Day. John really enjoyed driving the tiny rental car along the curving roads along the coast to Omaha Beach and the American Memorial. A walk along the beaches of D-Day was breathtaking.
We finished off the trip with a visit to the Chateau of Versailles in the snow and some shopping at the Galleries Lafayette, much like our version of New York City's Macy's. Both were so enormous, we saw very little of what each had to offer.
All in all, what a great trip, but I'm happy to be back home in the United States. Check out my France slideshow to the right!
